    Barn Owl Box Installed

Over several nesting seasons a pair of Barn Owls lived in the park.  One season they raised five chicks.  After the owls had moved on, their nesting site was destoyed as the host tree toppled in a storm.  The next season the owls chose a poor nesting site. As a reulst all the chicks and one adult perished.  The surviving adult was found but in very bad condition.  Raptor specialists from Zoo Atlanta rehabilitated the owl and release him to the park.  The owls were back the following season but chose a new nesting site.  And this past nesting season, there were reports of Barn Owls in the area but a nesting site in the park was not found.

In an effort to provide the Barn Owls a stable home life the Conservancy worked with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Georgia Power to install a specially built house for the barn owls.

Perry Craig, Tyson Crabbe, Marcus Miles and Robert Mason of Georgia Power and Tim Keyes, Wildlife Biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources were on site to place the Barn Owl box in Grant Park.
